A long row of rickshaws at the entrance to the pier in Yokohama Harbor, Kanagawa Prefecture. The red brick building on the right is the Kanagawa Harbor Office (神奈川県港務部). It was designed by British architect Josiah Conder (1852-1920) and completed in 1890 (Meiji 23). To accommodate large ships, construction of an iron pier was started in 1889 (Meiji 22) and completed in 1894 (Meiji 27). It was designed by British Army Engineer Henry Spencer Palmer (1838-1893), and built by Zentaro Mita (三田善太郎, 1855-??). |
