Yokohama Meiji 1900s Unknown

View on the Grand Hotel in Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture. In the back is Yokohama Port.

Entrepreneur Mary E. Green rented lot No. 20, which was owned by a consortium including famed Italian-British photographer Felice Beato, and opened the hotel in 1870 (Meiji 3). The hotel soon closed for renovations and reopened on August 16, 1873 (Meiji 6). In 1890 (Meiji 13), the new building seen on the left in this image was built on No. 18 and 19. It was designed by French architect Paul Sarda (1847-1905).

Until the Kanto Great Earthquake of 1923 (Taisho 12) destroyed it, the Grand Hotel was Yokohama’s premier hotel.
