Tokyo Taisho 1920s Unknown

Theaters in Asakusa Park, Tokyo.

The large tower at the end of the left row of buildings is Ryounkaku (凌雲閣), Japan’s first western-style skyscraper. Popularly known as Asakusa Junikai (浅草十二階, Asakusa Twelve Stories), it housed Japan’s first electric elevator.

The tower was destroyed in the Great Kanto Earthquake (Kanto Daishinsai) of September 1, 1923 (Taisho 12).
