80302-0003-PP - Honcho-dori

Yokohama Meiji 1890s Kimbei Kusakabe
A man pulls a rickshaw in front of shops in Honcho-dori in Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture. The photographer stood near No. 60 where Maebashi-cho intersects with Honcho-dori. Gas lanterns line the street. The signs on the left advertise Bible House, the stationery and print shop of the San Brothers and the pharmacy of Brett & Co, at this time Yokohama’s only Western pharmacist. On the right the watch shop of G. Schneider, and the shop of hairdresser and tobacconist T. Bachelor. In the back the Bluff at Yamate can be seen. Honcho-dori is also called Honmachi-dori in some sources. Maps of the time, however, use Honcho-dori. Same as 70802-0013 – Honcho-dori, but with darker tones and cropped.
