Nagano | Meiji | 1880s | Adolfo Farsari |
The Nishi-Mochiya teahouse (left) at the Wada Pass on the Nakasendo highway, ca. 1885 (Meiji 18). The sign says Nishi Mochiya Inugai Rokubei. The sign on the right, Takeya Seibei. Wada was the most difficult pass on the Nakasendo. An interesting aspect of this image are the rickshaws that carried photographer Adolfo Farsari and his equipment to this location. One box is still in one of the rickshaws on the right, while more boxes can be seen near the rickshaw with the man sitting in it. Ropes to keep the boxes in place are actually still hanging from the rickshaw. IMPORTANT |
