Tokyo | Meiji | 1870s | Kuichi Uchida |
The moat near the Nishimaru gate of the Imperial Palace in Tokyo. Across the moat on the right a Kami Yashiki (上屋敷), the residence of a daimyo (feudal lord), can be seen. Japanese photographer Kuichi Uchida (内田 九一, 1844–1875) photographed this scene between 1872 (Meiji 5) and 1874 (Meiji 7). Kimbei Kusakabe carried the image in his catalogue, confusing many people into thinking he was the photographer. |
