Nagasaki Meiji 1890s Unknown

Ryokan (Japanese inns) at Obama Onsen (spa), in Nagasaki Prefecture, ca. 1880s. It was formerly part of Hizen Province.

Travellers travelled here by boat from Mogi. The village forms the entrance to Unzen and is the starting point for the climb to Mt. Unzen from the direction of Nagasaki City.

Established in 713, Obama had inns built along the narrow coast line. It became very popular during the Meiji Period. Obama still is a spa resort today and has the hottest and most active springs in Japan.
