100908-0058 - Shijimigawa River

Osaka Meiji 1890s Unknown

Kurayashiki and teahouses on the Shijimigawa River (蜆川) in Osaka’s Kitashinchi (北新地) district. Several boats can be seen.

A Kurayashiki is a house built like a warehouse. Boats with geisha entertaining guests could be seen here in the evening, laughter and shamisen music drifiting into the air. One of these boats, called yakatabune (屋形船), can be seen on the left.

After the area burnt down during the Kita no Taika (キタの大火, Great Kita Fire) of July 31, 1909 (Meiji 42), Shijimigawa was filled in and vanished.
