101105-0023 - Amida-ike Pond

Osaka Meiji 1890s Unknown
Amida-ike at Wako-ji Temple in Osaka’s Horie district. The image of the temple’s deity is housed in the small structure above the pond. According to legend an ancient statue of Amida Buddha was disposed at the pond during an anti-Buddhism movement. After it was recovered the pond was seen as a holy place and a temple was built. During the Edo Period (1604-1868) temples were rare places of entertainment and Wako-ji was no exception. The temple had a famous lottery, plant fair and sumo tournaments, and its grounds were filled with entertainment stages, game arcades, show tents, and street vendors.
