110607-0001 - Oura Foreign Settlement

Nagasaki Meiji 1880s Adolfo Farsari
The Oura foreign settlement (大浦居留地) in Nagasaki seen from Minamiyamate (南山手), ca. 1899 (Meiji 32). The temple like building in the middle is the Confucian Shrine completed in October 1893 (Meiji 26) and still in use to this day. The three buildings behind the shrine survive to this day as part of seven preserved Western-style buildings in Higashiyamate. This image has been attributed to the Adolfo Farsari Studio. Note that Adolfo Farsari himself left Japan in 1890 (Meiji 23), but his studio listed him as proprietor until 1901 (Meiji 34).
