110610-0011 - Tea Ceremony 11

Inside Meiji 1900s Kozaburo Tamamura
Tea Ceremony: Admiring the chinaware. This image comes from “The Ceremonial Tea Observance in Japan,” published in 1907 (Meiji 40) by photographer Kozaburo Tamamura, and later by Teijiro Takagi.
Original text: “It is considered ‘good form’ for the guests to praise the beauty of the tea-set, more especially so if the porcelain be of an ancient origin; this subject forms the principal ‘small talk’ for the occasion; thus one needs to be somewhat of a curio connoisseur for one’s opinions to be respected.”
