This image is part of “The School Life of Young Japan” (No 1), a series published by Japanese photographer Kozaburo Tamamura in the early 1900s (late Meiji).

Original text: “A wet morning. But the school hours begin at eight, but no allowance can be made for, ‘please, teacher, it was raining;’ and so we have here a sketch of future generation entering the school. sheltered with Kasa (oiled-paper umbrellas), and Geta (high, wooden shoes).”
