Shizuoka | Meiji | 1900s | Unknown |
Panoramic view of the Tokaido at Shirasuka-juku (白須賀宿) from Shiomizaka (汐見坂). Shirasuka, located in Kosai, Shizuoka Prefecture, was the thirty-second of the fifty-three stations of the Tokaido. Shirasuka-juku was originally located at the shore, but was moved inland after a tsunami devastated the area in 1707. It is generally believed that Emperor Meji saw the Pacific Ocean for the first time at Shirasuka-juku on his way to Edo (current Tokyo) in 1868 (Meiji1). |
