Sanyo Hotel (山陽ホテル) in Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi Prefecture. The hotel was built in 1902 (Meiji 35) within walking distance of Shimonoseki Station, a terminal station with important boat connections to the Asian mainland. Members of the Imperial family as well as high government officials regularly stayed here. Of such importance was the social role of the hotel in the city that newspapers published the names and occupations of the guests daily. The two story wooden structure burned down in 1922 (Taisho 11) and was replaced by a brick building in 1923 (Taisho 12). |
