Japan’s first railway under construction at Kanagawa, Yokohama. The bridge in the center is Aokibashi Bridge (青木橋) on the Tokaido. Published in the October 2, 1871 (Meiji 4) issue of THE FAR EAST (Vol 2, No 11). Construction was started in 1870 (Meiji 3), and the railway was officially opened on June 12, 1872 (Meiji 5). On this image, Kanagawa Station, which would be located near Aokibashi, has not yet been constructed. Original text: “Railway at Kanagawa, Noge.” |
