A broom vendor talks with a man standing in front of a doorway in a backstreet in Osaka, ca 1870. There are no electricity poles and gas lamps yet. Osaka’s first gas-powered lamp was unveiled in 1871 (Meiji 4), while electricity was introduced around 1887 (Meiji 20).
