Studio Meiji 1890s Unknown

Four young girls dressed up as chigo (稚児) for an unidentified matsuri (religious festival). Children of a young age were widely used in festival events where a medium was required. They have thickly powdered faces and are wearing white kimono and purple hakama, as well as special headwear called tenkan (天冠. lit. heaven’s crown). They are holding sacred sakaki (榊) branches.
