Diplomat and educator Jiro Yano (矢野二郎, 1845-1906). Yano accompanied a mission to Europe as a translator in 1863 (Bunkyu 3). He joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1870 (Meiji 3) and became Japan’s Special Charge d’Affaires in the United States. In 1875 (Meiji 8), he returned to Japan and became the first director of Shoho Koshujo (商法講習所), Japan’s first commercial college and the predecessor of Hitotsubashi University.
