Nikko Taisho 1910s Unknown

Kamishinmichi in Nikko, Tochigi Prefecture, is lined by giant trees and leads to Futarasan Jinja, a Shinto shrine placed between Toshogu Shrine and the Taiyuin Mausoleum. In the back, a sacred torii can be seen. On this location now stands the Roumon Gate, built in 1982. These days dozens of stone lanterns line Kamishinmichi, but these didn’t exist yet when this photo was taken.
