Tokyo Taisho 1920s Unknown

The Kaijo Hoken Building in Marunouchi, Tokyo.

Completed in 1918, the building housed the offices of the Tokio Marine Insurance Company. Established in 1879 as Japan’s first non-life insurance company, it specialized in marine cargo insurance.

In 1880 it appointed its first overseas agents, in London, Paris and New York. Today it is the largest non-mutual private insurance group in Japan.

Since 2004, the company is known as Tokio Marine & Nichido, one of a very small number of organizations using the city’s old spelling.
