The Kaijo Hoken Building in Marunouchi, Tokyo. Completed in 1918, the building housed the offices of the Tokio Marine Insurance Company. Established in 1879 as Japan’s first non-life insurance company, it specialized in marine cargo insurance. In 1880 it appointed its first overseas agents, in London, Paris and New York. Today it is the largest non-mutual private insurance group in Japan. Since 2004, the company is known as Tokio Marine & Nichido, one of a very small number of organizations using the city’s old spelling. |
