Yokohama | Meiji | 1890s | Unknown |
Rickshaws in front of shops in Honcho-dori (本町通り) in Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture. The photographer stood near where Maebashi-cho (前橋町) intersects with Honcho-dori. Gas lanterns line the street. On the left, general store Lane, Crawford & Co. A sign further down the street on the left advertises the pharmacy of Brett & Co, at this time Yokohama’s only Western pharmacist. Across the street the shop of hairdresser and tobacconist T. Bachelor. In the back the Bluff at Yamate can be seen. Honcho-dori is also called Honmachi-dori in some sources. Maps of the time, however, use Honcho-dori. IMPORTANT |
