70216-0045 - Kyoto Incline

Kyoto Taisho 1910s Unknown

The Inclined Lift Boat Railway in Kyoto.

Between 1885 and 1912, canals were built to bring water from Lake Biwa, across the mountains, to Kyoto. The Incline was used to transfer boats used in the canal.

The project, designed by the recently graduated engineer Sakuro Tanabe, cost 10 times Kyoto’s annual budget at the time, but brought water, electricity and prosperity to the city.
