The Nishi-Mochiya teahouse (left) at the Wada Pass on the Nakasendo highway, ca. 1885 (Meiji 18). The sign says Nishi Mochiya Inugai Rokubei. The sign on the right, Takeya Seibei. Wada was the most difficult pass on the Nakasendo. This was especially the case in winter, when there could be as much as 3 meters of snow. |
