Miyagi Meiji 1890s Unknown

Japanese fishermen near a cave in Matsushima, Miyagi Prefecture. The 260 tiny islands covered in pines are listed as one of the Three Views of Japan (日本三景, Nihon Sankei), a canonical list of Japan’s three most celebrated scenic sights.

From a series of glass slides published (but not photographed) by Scottish photographer George Washington Wilson (1823–1893). Wilson’s firm was one of the largest publishers of photographic prints in the world.
