70221-0027 - Gathering Shells

Outside Showa 1920s Unknown

Gathering shells at low tide, a common and popular past-time in Japan until the water became too polluted. Recently, this customs is making a comeback at places where beaches have been sufficiently regenerated.

This card is from a series called “Nihon Fuuzoku” (Japanese Customs). The printing quality is not so good, but the series gives a great view on daily life in Japan during the early Showa Period (1925-1989).
