Shop to obtain funds for the women’s political movement in Japan, 1925 (Taisho 14). The shopkeeper is identified as Mrs. K. Kawamoto. Women’s advocacy started in Japan in the nineteenth century, but aggressive politicking for women’s suffrage didn’t start until the 1920s. Japanese women were finally granted the right to vote under a new (US-drafted) constitution in 1946 (Showa 21). |
