Tokyo Showa 1920s Unknown

Men look on as a carriage is getting prepared for Emperor Taisho’s funeral, January 1927 (Showa 2).

Emperor Taisho died of a heart attack on December 25 1926 (Taisho 15).

His funeral, held at night, consisted of a 6 kilometer long procession along a route lit with wood fires in iron lanterns. Some 20,000 mourners followed an ox-drawn cart containing the imperial coffin.
