Tokyo | Showa | 1930s | Shufu no Tomo |
Tokyo Central Post Office (東京中央郵便局) in Marunouchi, Tokyo as seen from Tokyo Station, ca. 1932 (Showa 7). The building is still under construction and surrounded by an enclosure. Opened in 1933 (Showa 8), the functionalist building was designed by Japanese architect Tetsuro Yoshida (吉田鉄郎, 1894-1956) who designed many Japanese post offices and telegraph offices. At the time, it was the largest and most modern post office in Asia and represented Japan’s modernity. This image has kind of a soft focus and is grainy. |
