Hokkaido Taisho 1920s Unknown

Visitors at Goryokaku Fort (五稜郭) in Hakodate (函館), Hokkaido, ca. 1920s.

Designed in 1855 (Ansei 2), the five-pointed star fort was built by the Tokugawa shogunate to protect the Tsugaru Strait against a possible invasion by the Russian fleet.

The last battle of the Boshin War (戊辰戦争, 1868–1869) was fought here in June 1869 (Meiji 2)
