Ship construction at the Uraga Dock Company (浦賀船渠株式会社) in Uraga (浦賀), a subdivision of Yokosuka in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, ca. 1960 (Showa 35). The Uraga Dock Company was founded in 1869 (Meiji 2) by Admiral Enomoto Takeaki (榎本 武揚, 1836–1908), one of the founders of the Imperial Japanese Navy. By 1919 (Taisho 8), it was considered one of the largest and best equipped private shipyards in the world. The shipyard was acquired by the Sumitomo group in 1969 (Showa 44). It closed down in 2003 (Heisei 15). |
