160307-0039 - Autumn in Arashiyama

Kyoto Meiji 1900s Teijiro Takagi

A man wearing a straw raincoat (mino) and a conical hat (菅笠, sugegasa) carries a fishing net during autumn at the Hozugawa River in Arashiyama, Kyoto.

In the back a flat bottom boat can be seen.

For centuries the Hozugawa River was used to transport goods like rice, barley, wheat, charcoal and timber. But from 1895 (Meiji 28), the 2 hour trip down the river became a popular tourist attraction (Hozugawa Kudari).
