160307-0043 - Maiko and Cherry Blossom

Shizuoka Taisho 1910s Nobukuni Enami

Three maiko admire the view of the garden of Fugetsuro (浮月楼) in Shizuoka during cherry blossom time in early spring.

Fugetsuro was created in 1869 (Meiji 2) by Tokugawa Yoshinobu (徳川 慶喜, 1837–1913), Japan’s last shogun. He lived here for 20 years.

Fugetsuro was damaged by fire in 1892 (Meiji 25), 1940 (Showa 15) and 1945 (Showa 20), but was restored each time. The pond and the garden still exist and some of the stone lanterns even today show signs of fire damage.
