Yokohama | Meiji | 1900s | Ueda Studio |
Three rickshaw pullers in front of the Yokohama United Club (横浜ユナイテッドクラブ) on the Yokohama Bund in Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture. Yokohama United Club was established in 1866 (Keio 2) as an organization for British soldiers and residents. The building in this image was completed in 1900 (Meiji 33). It was designed by famed British architect Josiah Conder (ジョサイア・コンドル, 1852-1920). Conder designed many well-known Meiji buildings, among which the Ueno Imperial Museum (1881), the Rokumeikan (1883) and the Holy Resurrection Cathedral (or Nikorai-do, 1891), all in Tokyo. |
