Tokyo Broadcasting Station, with the call letters JOAK, on Atagoyama in Tokyo (東京放送局愛宕山放送所). The organization is now known as NHK, Japan’s national broadcasting organization. It was founded in 1924 (Taisho 13). Together with separate organizations in Osaka and Nagoya, it began radio broadcasts the following year. The three stations merged in 1926 (Taisho 15). The newly formed Japan Broadcasting Corporation (日本放送協会, Nihon Hoso Kyokai) modelled itself on the BBC of the United Kingdom. NHK’s second radio network began in 1931 (Showa 6), while a third radio network (FM) was launched in 1937 (Showa 12). From a series called Great Tokyo (大東京, Dai Tokyo). |
