Tokyo | Showa | 1930s | Unknown |
The front gate of the campus of Tokyo Imperial University (東京帝國大學) in Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo. In the far back, the Yasuda Auditorium (安田講堂) can be seen, designed by Japanese architect Yoshikazu Uchida (内田 祥三, 1885–1972). Completed in 1925 (Taisho 14), it has become a symbol of higher education and one of the most famous buildings in Japan. The university was founded in 1886 (Meiji 19) as the Imperial University (帝國大學). In 1897 (Meiji 30), it was renamed Tokyo Imperial University. It is now known as the University of Tokyo (東京大学), generally abbreviated as Todai (東大). It is one of Japan’s most prestigious universities. From a series called Great Tokyo (大東京, Dai Tokyo). |
