Kanagawa Bakumatsu 1860s Felice Beato

Atsugi Juku (厚木宿) in Kanagawa Prefecture, a shukueki (way station) on the Yagurazawa Okan Road (矢倉沢往還), which connected Shizuoka and Edo, ca 1865 (Keio 1). There is a better known version of this image, showing the rice bales neatly piled up. Perhaps the photographer didn’t like the look of the bales scattered on the road and had them neatly arranged before taking another photograph.
