160902-0043 - Prefectural Government Office

Yokohama Taisho 1910s Unknown

The third Kanagawa Prefectural Government Office Building (神奈川県庁舎) in Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture.

The Renaissance style building was designed by Japanese architects Tokuma Katayama (片山東熊, 1854–1917) and Kozaburo Kigo (木子幸三郎, 1874–1941). It was completed in June 1913 (Taisho 2).

Katayama is especially famous for designing the Imperial Nara Museum and the Kyoto Imperial Museum.

The building was destroyed by the fires raging after the Great Kanto Earthquake (Kanto Daishinsai) of September 1, 1923 (Taisho 12). In 1928 (Showa 3), it was replaced with an art deco building still in use today.
