A small crowd is descending the stairs at Tsurugaoka Hachimangu (鶴岡八幡宮) in Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture, ca. 1950 (Showa 25). The shrine was founded in 1063 (康平/Kohei 6). It is especially famous for its almost 2 kilometer long straight approach, which reaches to the ocean and functions as Kamakura’s main street. |
