70301-0013 - Elevated Railway Tracks

Tokyo Taisho 1910s Unknown

A steam locomotive pulls passenger cars on elevated railway tracks near Tokyo Station in Tokyo. In the foreground is Yamashitabashi Bridge crossing a former moat of Edo Castle. The bridge is situated where the Yamashita Gomon Castle Gate used to be. In the back, the Teikoku Hotel (Imperial Hotel) can be seen.

The hotel opened on November 20, 1890. The hotel was destroyed by fire on April 16, 1922. On September 1, 1923, a new Teikoku Hotel, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, was opened. That building was torn down in 1968.

The current Teikoku Hotel doesn’t have the grace and elegance of its two predessors, but still stands on the same location, albeit facing west instead of north.
