161217-0029 - Kobe Water Supply Tanks

Kobe Meiji 1900s Sakaeya Studio

Water supply tanks in Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture.

Kobe’s waterworks project was started in 1892 (Meiji 25) after a cholera epidemic in 1890 (Meiji 23) claimed 1,000 lives.

The basic planning and design were done by Scottish engineer William Kinnimond Burton (1856–1899) while the actual construction was done by Japanese engineers.

Construction began in 1897 (Meiji 30). The system began supplying water in 1900 (Meiji 33). It was Japan’s seventh modern waterworks system.
