Family members playing Karuta during New Year. One person reads part of a poem on a yomifuda (reading) card, while others try to be the first to get the corresponding torifuda (grabbing) cards with the rest of the poem. The poems are from the classical Japanese anthology of one hundred Japanese waka by one hundred poets known as Ogura Hyakunin Isshu (小倉百人一首). The game is still played during New Year today. |
