Yokohama Meiji 1890s Unknown

People are gathering shellfish at the beach in front of the Grand Hotel in Yokohama, Kanagawa prefecture.

The hotel was opened on August 16, 1873 (Meiji 6) and was soon considered the height of Western culture and elegance in Japan.

The building in front, designed by American architect Richard P. Bridgens (リチャード・ブリジェンス, 1819 -1891), is the original hotel. The building next to it was added later.

The building with the text No. 16 is the studio of Italian photographer Adolfo Farsari (1841–1898).
