Portrait of Hirondo Tomizu (戸水寛人博士, 1861-1935), ca. 1890 (Meiji 23). Tomizu was a professor of law at Tokyo Imperial University and one of the “Shichi Hakase” (seven professors) who between 1900 (Meiji 33) and the start of the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905) advocated war against Russia. Their petitions greatly influenced the public mood and steered Japan towards war. Photo by Francis R. Elnell, 122 Regent St., London, UK. |
