170201-0046 - Suwa Jinja

Nagasaki Meiji 1900s Unknown

Sacred torii gate at Suwa Jinja, an important Shinto shrine on the slopes of Mount Tamazono in Nagasaki.

Nagasaki’s best known religious festival, Nagasaki Kunchi, is held here. Authorities used the festival to discover Christians after the religion was banned early in the Edo Period (1603-1868).
